      New advances worldwide on the pathway of astaxanthin biosynthesis, character of key enzymes, and their gene cloning, expression and the regulatory mechanisms in Haemato-coccus pluvialis in recent years were reviewed in present paper. The innovating research aspects in related field in China were also proposed.
